One of the things I’m missing a lot at the moment is conference travel. 2020 was the year in which face-to-face conferences were suddenly tossed aside in favor of virtual or broadcast versions, and slowly but surely 2022 – especially the latter half – has brought them back. We’ll see how things go for us at work, especially in the spring next year.
One of the conference series I’ve enjoyed going to has been Techorama in Belgium. Originally it was in Mechelen, about 20km north of Brussels, but grew in size after two or three years so they had to move to Antwerp. Me, I liked Mechelen so much that I’d add a day onto the Antwerp conference trip just so I could relax in what’s turned out to be my favorite Belgian town.
Last time I was there was in May 2019 and as usual I wandered around a bit before getting dinner. There was some exterior wall art at Het Kunstuur, the former Holy Ghost Chapel. This is just west of Sint-Romboutstoren, the famous tower in Mechelen. Of course I had to take photos of the paintings.
Another fun part of Mechelen are the various bits of street art. I’ll show some next time.
