The Gazette starts charging for ancillary stuff

Our local newspaper is the Gazette and we have it delivered every day. Neither of us like it particularly — we also get the New York Times, which is more reliable for news — but having the local news is essential for my wife's work.

I just got this email from them:

Beginning January 18th, 2009, the TV Book will no longer be included with your regular Sunday Home Delivery of The Gazette. But don't worry! If you would like to continue this service, and have the book delivered with your Sunday paper, simply click on the link below!

For the low cost of 99 cents a month, or $11.88 per year, you can enjoy the TV Book every Sunday. For uninterrupted service, you must act now!

Excuse me? Shouldn't that be "if you don't want this service we'll credit you $11.88 per year?" Hmm? After all if you're taking away a service from me, the overall cost should be less. No?

Pah. Don't want the damned thing, but I wonder what else will be "extra charge" in the future...

Beginning April 31st, the Metro section with all the local news and weather will no longer be included with your Monday to Friday delivery. If you'd like to continue this invaluable service, have your credit card ready and click the link below! For the low cost of 49 cents a day...
